Rep. Louise M. Slaughter (D-NY-28), Chairwoman of the House Rules Committee, announced that Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff has agreed to join her in a meeting at New York Governor Eliot Spitzer`s office within the next 30 days to discuss the creation of an enhanced driver`s license that could serve as an alternative to a passport.
I am very pleased that Secretary Chertoff will join me in discussions concerning the creation of an enhanced driver`s license, Rep. Slaughter said. As I`ve said all along, an enhanced driver`s license is a better option for the people of Western New York, and for many cross-border travelers nationally, than a passport.
Secretary Chertoff also informed Congresswoman Slaughter that he will be sending additional customs and border officials to the Peace Bridge in Buffalo, New York to reduce congestion and facilitate traffic flow. The Peace Bridge is one of the nation`s busiest northern border crossings.
I believe Secretary Chertoff`s decisions represent a new way forward with respect to smart northern border policies, Rep. Slaughter said.
