Five reasons why you should visit Oman

Is Oman worth visiting? Find 5 reasons why you should travel to Oman for your next holidays, from culture to food and safety for international tourists.

For many years, Oman has been little known among Western tourists, who often fly to the area to shop in Dubai and keep the Egyptian pyramids at the top of their Middle Eastern archaeological itinerary. Among travelers from nearby countries, Oman has also been often overlooked in favor of the neighbor Saudi Arabia and its religious importance.

However, the world is finally discovering that Oman is the perfect holiday destination made of breathtaking landscapes and natural wonders, UNESCO World Heritage Sites and archaeological treasures, and a vibrant and friendly local culture. There is much to do and see in Oman and the country is ideal for all types of travelers, including families and ladies traveling solo, thanks to its welcoming and safe environment.

Not convinced yet? Keep reading to find the best reasons why Oman is worth visiting.

1. From the desert to the sea: Oman’s stunning nature
When you think of spending magical Arabian Nights (and days) in the desert, you’re thinking of Oman. Get ready for the desert adventure of a lifetime thanks to Oman’s perfect sand dunes, camel rides, and Bedouin camps. There are several spots to choose from but tourists report that there’s nothing quite like the sunset on the golden dunes of the Wahiba Sands desert.

What really surprises visitors, however, is the great variety of landscapes in Oman. From the dreamlike desert, a short trip to the southern coast will take you into a completely different environment, made of waterfalls and lush vegetation, white sand beaches and crystal clear waters, and even a monsoon season that goes from June to September.

The glory of nature is celebrated during the Khareef Festival in Salalah, one of Oman’s most popular public events. During the monsoon season, this usually dry city turns into a natural paradise, an oasis made of flowers, blowholes, and temporary lakes.

There is nothing lovers of the outdoors cannot do in Oman, from trekking in majestic mountains to diving among sea turtles and coral gardens.

2. You will feel welcome in Oman
Omani people are known all over the world for their welcoming spirit. They are proud of their culture and genuinely excited to see foreigners discover it — should you ever need directions or advice, don’t hesitate to ask locals, they will be happy to help.
Hospitality is an important value in Omani culture. Don’t be surprised to receive an invitation to have coffee and sweets at someone’s house.

On the other hand, Omanis are also very respectful and it’s unlikely that you will ever find them pushy or crossing personal boundaries. It’s not common behavior in Oman to stare at people and unless you seek to start a conversation, strangers will not approach you.

The Omani authorities also show enthusiasm for international tourism and have recently simplified the process of obtaining visas and permits for the country. It’s now possible to apply for an Omani visa online in minutes for the comfort of one’s home or office. Click here to find more information.

3. A safe and clean country
Oman is easy to visit even for non-experienced travelers. That’s because the government makes great efforts to make the country liveable, safe, and clean for its citizens and visitors.

The Sultanate is one of the safest nations in the region. The political environment is stable and peaceful, the economy is thriving, and there is virtually no risk of terrorism (the Institute of Economics and Peace defines Oman as a country with “0” terrorism impact, the only one in the Middle East and Gulf area.)

Crime rates are extremely low and foreigners are unlikely to become victims of illegal activities. Pickpocketing and robberies are a risk like everywhere in the world, especially on public transport or crowded places. Oman is also considered very safe for female solo travelers.

Visitors will be surprised by the pristine state of Omani businesses, streets, and public spaces. Citizens of the Sultanate love their land so much that they made it one of the cleanest in the world.

4. World-class dining and shopping
The moment you arrive in an Omani city, you will be tempted to walk into a restaurant, a market, or both. Omani cuisine remains traditional and authentic, based on ingredients like rice, meat, and vegetables cooked in a variety of ways and with a great assortment of spices and herbs.

Perhaps the most famous dish is the Shuwa, marinated meat that is covered with banana leaves and left to cook in an underground oven in the sand for 2 days.

Omanis are also famous for their handicraft. From silverware and pottery to handmade bags and clothes, you will soon find that local markets (souks) are a souvenir goldmine. Those who love prestigious brands will certainly enjoy a shopping session in one of the many malls in the capital Muscat.

5. Oman is rich in history and architecture
Those passionate about history and culture are in for a treat during a holiday in Oman. There are over 500 castles and forts scattered across the country and hidden in the desert. The most famous one is Bahla Fort, a UNESCO World Heritage Site built in the 13th century.

The architectural landscape of Oman is just as varied as its nature. Visitors who have had enough of exploring fortifications can admire the Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque, which features a 50-meters high central dome and a hand-weaved Persian carpet measuring 70 x 60 meters. The same architects who designed the Mosque are also behind the Royal Opera House and its exquisites arabesques.

If you are the type of tourist who enjoys discovering the everyday life of the country you’re visiting, leave the grandeur of the city behind and head to the rural mountain settlements in the North or the small fishing villages near Salalah.
