Almost 20 million passengers: Berlin’s growth bucks the national trend

The growth in passenger numbers is primarily due to airberlin and easyJet. airberlin saw growth of 8.9 per cent at Tegel in the period of January to September 2013, and easyJet achieved growth of ten per cent at Schonefeld Airport during the first nine months.

From January to September 2013, 19,820,700 passengers took off and landed at Berlin’s Schonefeld and Tegel airports – more than ever before. This represents a growth of four per cent compared to the same period the previous year. During the first nine months of the year, 5,052,111 passengers were recorded at Schonefeld (-6.9 per cent) and 14,768,589 passengers at Tegel (+8.3 per cent).

“A look at the passenger figures for the first nine months of the year once again shows how strong the air transport location Berlin-Brandenburg is,” says Hartmut Mehdorn, CEO of Flughafen Berlin Brandenburg GmbH. “In contrast to the national trend, we are delighted to be able to report a four per cent growth in passenger numbers compared to last year,” he adds.

The number of flight movements in the January to September period fell to a total of 180,335 take-offs and landings, which represents a decrease of 1.7 per cent compared to the same period the previous year. In Schonefeld, the number of flight movements fell to 49,016 compared to the previous year. This corresponds to a decrease of 10.6 per cent. At Tegel there was a slight increase of 2.1 per cent compared to the previous year. During the first nine months of the year, a total of 131,319 flight movements were recorded at Tegel.

Air freight at Schonefeld and Tegel airports during the period of January to September 2013 amounted to 25,165 tonnes, which represents an increase of 3.4 per cent compared to the same period the previous year.

Traffic report for the month of September
Last month a total of 2,539,965 passengers used Schonefeld and Tegel airports (+3.1 per cent). This makes September 2013 the busiest month of all time in Berlin. At Schonefeld Airport, 634,254 passengers were recorded last month. That is 5.7 per cent less than in the same period the previous year. In Tegel, 1,905,711 passengers were recorded in the month of September, 6.4 per cent more than in September 2012.

The total number of flight movements in September amounted to 22,221 take-offs and landings, which represents a decrease of 2.1 per cent compared to the same period the previous year. The amount of air freight carried in September increased by 9.8 per cent to 3,381 tonnes.
