Iberia’s management and the three main trade unions (CC.OO., UGT and ASETMA) have signed the company’s 17th collective bargaining agreement for ground staff. The agreement, valid from January 1st until December 31st, 2007, covers the airline’s 18,000 ground employees who make up about 72% of Iberia’s total workforce.

The agreement stipulates a 2% wage increase, and an additional rise if needed rise to offset real 2007 inflation. It also calls for changes in 1,177 hiring contracts, whereby 745 employees now on temporary status will become permanent, and some permanent jobs will be redefined as temporary. Productivity standards will be applied in the Maintenance and Engineering Division. Other new measure will streamline administration in all company areas.

The new contract also calls for the forming of committees to safeguard equal opportunity, to consider necessary measures for employees working at airports (productivity, hours, absenteeism, hiring, etc.), and to analyse night work and shifts.

Today, Iberia is Spain’s leading airline and also leader on routes linking Europe with Latin America. It posted an operating income of about 5.4 billion euros, net earnings of 116.1 million euros and an Ebitdar of 790.5 million euros in 2006. It is also distinguished by its commitment to socially and environmentally responsible conduct. Along with its franchise partner Iberia Regional, Iberia operates some 1,000 flights each day to about 100 different destinations. Last year, Iberia carried a total of 33 million passengers. It is a member of the oneworld airline alliance, along with American Airlines, British Airways, Cathay Pacific, Finnair, JAL, LAN, Malev, Qantas and Royal Jordanian.
