At its last meeting on the 24th July 2008, SAPE (Council for Higher Education of the Greek Ministry of Education) unanimously approved the establishment of a Department of Tourism Economics & Management at the University of the Aegean (based at the island of Chios in Greece). The establishment of this university Department satisfies a need clearly expressed for a long time by tourism enterprises, tourism organisations and bodies as well as by the academic community in Greece.
It should be noted that at the moment in Greece there is no other university Department offering comprehensive tourism and hospitality studies; it is expected that the establishment of the Department of Tourism Economics & Management at the University of the Aegean will contribute positively to further development of tourism in Greece, through the provision of high-quality tourism education and research.
