50s fashion in residence at Hotel Granvia in Barcelona

Maria Espeus is the author of the large-format images now decorating the different spaces of the newly-renovated hotel in Barcelona. The modern, cosy style of the hotel preserves the historic character of the 19th-century palace that houses it.

BARCELONA – Hotel Granvia in Barcelona, which belongs to the Nunez y Navarro stable of hotels, has put the final touches to its renovation with a series of photographs by Swedish artist Maria Espeus. A feminine presence and 50s fashion and glamour are the common theme of these largeformat, black and white images.

“When I was invited to decorate Hotel Granvia I was immediately sure about what I wanted to do. Influenced by the prevailing luminosity and whiteness in the hotel, I decided on a series of images that pay a little tribute to the work of European masters of photography, such as Irving Penn, and immortalise the refinement and glamour of women”, says Maria Espeus. “My images evoke those years when fashion exploded into the world of art; a world that fits perfectly with the calm and elegance exuded by the walls and spaces of the hotel”, adds Espeus.

The series consists of 12 photographs taken in 1988 and 1989, which will permanently decorate the hotel’s various spaces: the entrance, the lobby, the atrium on the first floor and the reading room and business centre.

Hotel Granvia was awarded the Certificate of Excellence 2013 by popular travel site Tripadvisor because of the excellent feedback it received from travellers. Located in the heart of the city, it offers a modern image and innovative services and amenities in the historic surroundings of a former 19th-century palace. It has 58 rooms, organised into six different categories and each with its own unique style owing to the building’s historical past.

With its tasteful design, unbeatable location and excellent service, this hotel will certainly seduce any visitor to the city, whether for business or pleasure.
