Hotwire reveals November 2012 Travel Savings Indicator

Warmer weather wscapes like Hawaii, Vegas, Miami Beach and Palm Springs offer deep discounts on a variety of travel products.

SAN FRANCISCO – Hotwire.com, a leading discount travel site, today released the November 2012 Hotwire Travel Savings Indicator, which features the top five cities in North America where hotel, air and car rental rates have dropped the most as compared to the same time last year. Using extensive pricing research to cover the three most popular travel products, the report helps guide travelers to the best destinations for maximizing their travel dollars each month.

“If you’re missing the summer sun, then you’re in luck because we’re seeing many warm weather destinations offering deep discounts this month,” said Clem Bason, president of the Hotwire Group. “Folks can take advantage of deals all the way from the Hawaiian Islands to the tip of Florida, and maybe they’ll also be sporting a great tan in all their holiday photos as well.”

Hotel Price Drops
Las Vegas tops the list for the fourth month in a row with a 10 percent drop. Convention business continues to be slow, but that’s good news for leisure travelers looking to hit the pools, shows and casinos at a fraction of what it typically costs.

Knoxville and Milwaukee join the list as newcomers with eight and seven percent drops, respectively. In Milwaukee, hoteliers are concerned that this winter’s weather won’t be as mild as it was last year and are lowering rates to adjust.  Meanwhile, travelers to Knoxville can put the money they’ll save on accommodations toward experiencing a vibrant live music and nightlife scene or visiting plenty of Civil War history at attractions like the Blount Mansion, and the Old Gray Cemetery.

Palm Springs and Charleston – named the top destination in the world in the 2012 Conde Nast Traveler Readers Choice Awards – round out the list with six percent drops. Convention business is down in this Southern California resort town, leaving Palm Springs with rooms to spare, while hoteliers in Charleston are discounting to keep the momentum going from a busy October and early November.

Air Price Drops
Colorado Springs, just a short drive from some the best ski resorts in the country, tops the airfare list this month with an 18 percent drop. However, the real airfare story is in Hawaii, where carriers are locked in a bit of a pricing war that’s creating drops in Honolulu (16 percent), Lihue, (12 percent) and Kahului (11 percent). Meanwhile, Toronto continues to compete with U.S. border towns for the best rates, but drops down the list from second place to fifth place this month with a nine percent drop.

Car Price Drops
For the second month in a row, Cincinnati tops the car rental list with a steep 33 percent drop. Detroit also reappears on the list with a 21 percent drop, though this month it’s tied for second place with newcomers Jersey City  and Seattle, which has been absent since June. Sunny Miami Beach, the last of the warm weather destinations on this month’s TSI and the perfect place for a convertible, rounds out the top five with an 18 percent drop.
