Germania now connects Dresden with Reykjavik/Keflavik

The route to Reykjavik/Keflavik is part of a flight programme from Dresden that has seen overall expansion. Germania will also be marking the start of the summer season 2018 by basing three aircraft at Nuremberg and increasing seating capacity.

BERLIN – From Wednesday 28th June 2017, Germania flies from Dresden to Reykjavik/Keflavik in Iceland. Passengers leaving from Dresden airport now have the opportunity to take their summer breaks far away from the traditional holiday destinations and Iceland is an alternative for active holidaymakers who prefer moderate summer temperatures. Until October 2017 Germania will be operating flights between the regional capital of Saxony and Reykjavik/Keflavik airport on Wednesdays and Saturdays. Germania will also link the two regions in summer 2018.

The first flight to Reykjavik/Keflavik took off from Dresden airport on June 28th.

The route to Reykjavik/Keflavik is part of a flight programme from Dresden that has seen overall expansion. Compared with the summer season of 2016, the number of flights operated by Germania to and from this regional capital has increased by 43 per cent. As a result the carrier, with its distinctive green and white livery, has expanded at Dresden airport in terms of space and personnel. The airline has moved into a much bigger crew lounge and installed technical equipment to make it even easier for the now 56 pilots and flight attendants to prepare for their flights. Germania will be creating further jobs at Dresden airport in summer 2018. The first vacancies will be advertised from autumn 2017 on flygermania.com.

Iceland is becoming an increasingly popular travel destination. The fjords, geysers, volcanoes, highlands as well as endless summer days make this island an ideal location for active holidaymakers keen to explore its unspoilt natural landscape on their trip. Keflavik is located 50 kilometres west of Iceland's capital, Reykjavik, another attractive destination on account of its wealth of cultural experiences. Iceland has a cool, maritime climate, which means that the island enjoys moderate temperatures in summer.

Germania increases its capacity and offers new destinations in Summer 2018
Germania will also be marking the start of the summer season 2018 by basing three aircraft at Nuremberg and increasing seating capacity. For the first time in Nuremberg the airline, with its distinctive green and white livery, will be operating an Airbus A321 over the summer. Germania is also increasing the number of its weekly departures from 30 to 45, thereby strengthening its position at Albrecht Durer Airport.

"We have already released our basic flight schedule for summer 2018, which reflects our further investment at our Nuremberg base. Experience gained from recent seasons has led us to make initial adjustments to our programme and we look forward to its implementation," commented Karsten Balke, CEO of Germania. The airline started to operate flights from Nuremberg in the 2016/17 winter season. By the end of April this year around 40,000 passengers had been welcomed on board at the airport, and since then bookings have been rising steadily.

According to the current schedule, the Airbus A321, with 215 seats, will be flying to Palma de Mallorca daily. Twice a week the aircraft will also be used on the new routes to Heraklion/Crete and Kos, as well as on established routes to Tenerife and Gran Canaria. New additions to the programme include four weekly flights to Antalya in Turkey. Germania is the only German airline to operate this route from Nuremberg and offers family-friendly midday departures. The Bulgarian destinations of Burgas and Varna are also being opened with three weekly connections during the summer.

Overall the current routes are being maintained, with minor changes in frequency or flight times. Flights to Athens have been moved to Monday and Friday during the week. This arrangement makes short breaks possible and also improves travel options for flights to smaller Greek islands with Germania's partner Sky Express. Non-stop flights from Nuremberg to Tel Aviv will also be available for the first time in summer 2018, as well as flights to Hurghada.

Dr Michael Hupe, managing director of Nuremberg Airport said: “The early announcement of the summer 2018 destinations shows that the metropolitan region of Nuremberg is a very attractive market in which Germania intends to grow further. We are delighted about the extension of the flight programme from Nuremberg Airport, which includes competitive holiday routes as well as selected destinations that serve touristic niches. This is just as well received by our passengers as the good on-board service.”
