Helsinki Airport sets a new record: Passenger volume now 15 million

The development programme will increase Helsinki Airport's check-in and transit travel capacity and improve the airport's traffic arrangements.

Helsinki Airport celebrated as the airport’s annual passenger volume increased to a record-breaking 15 million. At the same time, the airport is preparing to reach the 20 million passenger landmark.

“Reaching the magical 15 million passenger milestone is a significant accomplishment for us. The positive development of passenger volumes shows that we have done good work to promote a smooth travelling experience in cooperation with airlines and our other partners,” says Helsinki Airport director Ville Haapasaari at Finavia.

The 15th millionth passenger arrived on Thursday afternoon, 19 December. He was travelling from Amsterdam to Shanghai. His name is Jiayang Zhuo. He was received by Axl Smith, the airport director and, of course, by Santa Claus

The gentleman Jiayang Zhuo was received in an unforgettable way at the airport when he entered the terminal. He was received by the airport director, Santa Claus and Voice of Finland host, Axl Smith. A musical performance was given by Ike Ikegwuono and Miika Pylkkanen.

“This is how we are celebrating this excellent milestone, but we are also preparing for the future. The most extensive development programme in the history of Helsinki Airport will be launched in January and by the early 2020s, the airport’s passenger volume will be 20 million. We will celebrate again at that time,” says Haapasaari.

The development programme will increase Helsinki Airport’s check-in and transit travel capacity and improve the airport’s traffic arrangements. The aim is to ensure that Helsinki Airport will be able to maintain its strong competitive position in transit traffic between Europe and Asia.
