Seeing the places of history – Berlin: 25 years later

Berliners and visitors alike to become part of the commemoration.

BERLIN – Stand right on the spots where history was made: that’s on the agenda for those coming to Germany’s reunited capital 7-9 November to mark the 25th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall. “Even in this age of virtual reality, people want to see the actual spots where history was made,” comments Burkhard Kieker, CEO of visitBerlin. Current events around the world also make it clear that the global struggle for freedom and against dictatorship remains an important issue to this day. The fall of the Wall shows that this struggle can be won and the images of the epoch-changing event remain deeply rooted in the collective consciousness.

The centre of the commemoration will be the so-called “border of light,” where 8,000 balloons will be illuminated along 15 kilometres of the former border between Bornholmer Strasse and Oberbaumbrucke. Numerous display boards along the former border will tell the individual stories of those who tried to cross the border during the Wall’s 28 year history. There will also be commemorative events and music concerts. The lighting installation will end the evening of 9 November as the balloons are released into the open skies, symbolising the fall of the Berlin Wall and the end of the city’s division.
