Member airlines of the European Regions Airline Association (ERA<.>) have reported an average passenger growth rate of 5.6% for the first 9 months of 2001. The figures are dominated by the impact of the September 11th terrorist attack in the US, with the result that the growth rate for the month of September was -1.3%. This is the first time a monthly decrease has been recorded since ERA began compiling statistics.

The results for September are based on 10 days of normal operations (pre 11th) and the remainder of the month (post 11th) in the aftermath of the terrorism. Assuming passenger growth during the first 10 days of September was close to the January-August average of 6.5%, the actual passenger growth between 11-30 September is estimated at -5.3%.

Also in the month of September, hours dropped by 3% but landings grew by 9%, which is a clear indication of an improvement in arrival punctuality during the disruption to US airspace when the number of flights being handled by the air traffic system would have been reduced.
