How to step out of the box when starting a business

There are several businesses you can start, if you have the creative edge and drive to make them succeed. Let’s take a look at a few options.

If you've ever considered starting a business, you know that there are a lot of steps involved and more importantly, a lot of competition. So how do you set yourself apart in a sea of people who are aiming at the same target audience you are? The answer is simple: focus on an element of your chosen business model that others are neglecting. If you can fill a void in the market, and back it up with a solid business plan, you're setting yourself apart from the others who are competing with each other. There are several businesses you can start, if you have the creative edge and drive to make them succeed. Let's take a look at a few options.

Travel agent
If you have a love of traveling and your research tends to lead to you finding the most exotic places to go, becoming a travel agent might just be right up your alley. You can work independently or start your own agency, depending on just how much time you want to devote to your craft. Travel agents do everything from finding the best deals, forming partnerships with destination vendors and working directly with clients to book the trip. You can also draft up travel packages to attract new customers and work with companies to offer discounts to their employees, and get ratings on the guest experiences after the trip is over for research purposes.

Clothing lines
There is no shortage of clothing lines, but lately, everything seems to be mass produced with no real design input. If you love fashion, consider starting up a clothing line that has a purpose, whether it's raising awareness for specific conditions or solely focused on a specific age group such as infants and toddlers, teens or adults. You can even narrow it down to specific niches such as fitness lovers, sports fans or even chefs, for example.

When you first start out, you'll probably run the business out of your home to save on costs. You can choose vinyl, sublimation or direct-to-garment printing as your method of creation. As you start, business will inevitably be slow as you develop your customer base, but with proper marketing and quality products, you might just find yourself buried in orders. When this happens, it could be beneficial to look into maquiladora information as a means of lowering your production costs while increasing manufacturing capability without sacrificing quality.

Specialized niche of law
If you have a law degree and aren't happy with your current career path, you can take your future into your own hands. When it comes to law offices, you can find hundreds within a decently populated area, and thousands within a large city. Most lawyers are specialized, focused on a single niche such as bankruptcy, divorce or criminal law. If you really want to set yourself apart and break out of the mold, consider the area that you live in and do an analysis on which needs aren't being met. For example, if you live in a small country town where bicycles are a main way of transportation, you could specialize in personal injury law, more specifically as a bicycle accident lawyer. Of course, you don't have to limit yourself, but this is one way that you'll be meeting a need in addition to building up your own practice.

Tips for success
No matter which type of business you decide to start, there are some things you should take into consideration.

  • 1. Thorough planning is a must. Don't just dive head first into a new venture without knowing how you're going to start selling your products or services, and definitely develop a marketing plan before you open your doors (or online shop). If you're doing your startup as a side business in addition to your daily job, you're likely not going to need a backup plan for money, but if you're starting this venture with capital and nothing to fall back on, you need to have an exit strategy that minimizes your losses.
  • 2. Give up on perfection. It's natural to want everything to be perfect, but the truth is that it's not always possible. Overcoming perfection is a struggle, but you'll be better in the long run for it. Don't put your dreams on hold until everything is just so. If you plan it out as previously mentioned you'll be able to adjust your marketing and product/service development as you go along.
  • 3. Give it your all. The majority of your success is going to come as a result of your drive. If you don't put your all in, you're not going to know just how successful you can actually be. Don't let laziness and procrastination become a barrier to your endeavor.

With a little creative thinking and lots of due diligence, you'll soon be on a new career path that's not only outside the box but rewarding and profitable as well.
