Taking a gap year? Why not travel and earn a bit too

What are some of the jobs you can do during a gap year.

You are fresh out of school or uni and currently do not have a clear idea of what you really want to do. A gap year is probably just what you need to clear your head and weigh up your options. The whole world could be your oyster as you spend a year traveling or exploring career options!

However, a gap year doesn't mean you can't earn some money. In fact, if you plan to travel during this time, having a job can cover your accommodation and food costs. So, what are some of the jobs you can do during a gap year?

Work in hospitality
The hospitality sector has plenty of temporary jobs that you could do. This way, you could live in a different city or country as well. If you are lucky enough to land a job at a holiday resort on an island, your food and lodging would most likely be taken care of as well.

While bars, restaurants, and hotels often top the list in this sector, casinos are actually a great choice as well. That is because you could work as a croupier (or a dealer) at any casino in a city of your choice! The best part is that usually there is no specific qualification required to become a croupier. All you need are decent mathematical skills and a bit of training (which is usually on the job). Moreover, there are plenty of opportunities for growth in this industry if you want to consider it for the long term.

Teach English abroad
Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) is not only a popular choice but also gratifying. Countries in Asia and Latin America are the go-to destinations for this work. Along with experiencing the beautiful cultures of these places, you can earn enough to sustain yourself in a foreign country.

Sweat it out at a farm
You may have spent too many years slumming it in a crowded city. This could be your opportunity to spend time in the countryside, away from the hustle and bustle of cars and too many people. You could find work on a farm picking fruits, doing maintenance work, or taking care of animals. Being close to nature could be the icing on the cake that is your gap year.

Become a travel blogger or photographer
Not all travelers get the chance to really stay in one place and get the 'local' experience. You might be among the few who would give an in-depth insight into what it is like to live in a particular place. You can have a blog, a vlogging channel, and even social media to share your experience and advice. If you do a good job, it could ensure a great source of income for you. And if you are into photography at all, you can sell your best shots to magazines or stock image websites.

Overall, a gap year doesn't have to mean that you put a pause on everything. It could actually be the best time in your life to travel as you are ripe for new experiences during this time.
