Madonna di Campiglio, Italy, is the most expensive of the most popular winter destinations in the studied markets in Europe, with an average clicked price of 677 euros per night for a hotel room. Ischgl in Austria holds the second place on the list of the priciest top locations in Europe with an average clicked price of 583 euros per night, followed by Saalbach Hinterglemm in Austria at 436 euros per night. In North America, the top ski destination where travelers are willing to spend the most for accommodation this winter is Whistler in Canada, with an average clicked price of 452 euros per night.
Florianopolis and Byron Bay are the top destinations for a getaway in the Southern Hemisphere
Florianopolis in Brazil, where travelers are willing to spend €129 per night on average for a hotel, is the most popular Southern Hemisphere destination for the travel period of December 2018 through February 2019. The cheapest beach location of the top destinations for travel in South America these months is Villa Gesell in Argentina with an average clicked price of 85 euros for a room per night, followed by Covenas in Colombia with an average clicked price of 94 euros per night. In Oceania, the top destination is also the most expensive: hotels in Byron Bay, Australia, see an average clicked price of 300 euros per night. The least expensive of the top Southern Hemisphere destinations is Napier in New Zealand with an average clicked price of 144 euros per night, followed by Coffs Harbour in Australia, where travelers were willing to spend 156 euros per night on average.
The data behind the trends
trivago’s seasonal travel trends 2019 are based on data generated by travelers searching for hotels from December 1, 2017 through October 22, 2018 for travel dates between December 1, 2018 and February 28, 2019. The markets included in the study correspond to localized trivago Hotel Manager platforms. Top destinations are determined by number of click-outs (when a traveler clicks on a hotel rate on trivago and is taken to the booking site to complete their reservation) and the share of click-outs this season compared to the rest of the year. Average prices are based on room prices per night clicked on by travelers on trivago. All prices are shown in euros for comparability.
