St Julien Hotel & Spa appoints Sustainability Coordinator

Tim Barton joins Boulder Hotel to lead in-house green team, ensure property environmental goal achievement.

BOULDER, COLO. – St Julien Hotel & Spa announces the appointment of Tim Barton as sustainability coordinator – a new position at the Boulder, Colo. property, furthering its eco-friendly practices, product-use and more.

“We’re proud to welcome Tim to our team in this new position at the property,” said Aaron Coburn, general manager of St Julien Hotel & Spa. “Sustainability is of great importance to St Julien, and we look forward to Tim elevating our in-house efforts and furthering our status as an industry leader in sustainability.”

Prior to joining the St Julien team, Barton was a naturalist at the Seacoast Science Center, a non-profit marine science education organization in Rye, N.H. His background includes knowledge on environmental economics – the intersection of business and sustainability (remaining profitable while still being a beacon of sustainability); contemporary conservation issues, including recycling systems and day-to-day waste reduction best practices; and environmental policy.

In his new role, Barton will lead the hotel’s in-house Green Team, which sets and achieves various environmental goals, including minimizing overall waste, as well as utilizing eco-friendly products and practices at each of the hotel’s outlets – from spa to dining.

“I am pleased to join the St Julien Hotel & Spa team,” said Barton. “I am deeply passionate about sustainability, and addressing the larger conservation issues we face as a planet through hands-on, actionable systems and singular efforts at an individual property level, while remaining a profitable business and maintaining the genuine hospitality for which St Julien has long been known.”

St Julien’s composting program is second to none among other hotels in the U.S. The hotel composts waste from its food and beverage outlets and in all guestrooms. Depending on the number of events at the hotel each month, its staff redirects anywhere from 11,000 to 20,000 pounds of material – garbage, bottles, cans, newspapers, cardboard, steel cans, etc. In all, more than 70 percent of the property’s waste is diverted from the landfill through recycling, composting or donation.

St Julien has donated more than 10,000 pounds of goods to local partners; amenities and bedding with remaining useful life are donated to local charities, such as the Boulder Shelter for the Homeless and Safe House Alliance, and candles and corks are donated to Resource Area for Teachers, an organization that provides teachers and community groups with creative materials for hands-on learning. The property is also an official hotel partner of Clean the World, a non-profit that collects, recycles and distributes discarded soaps and other hygiene amenities to communities in need.

An Ecocycle Zero Waste Partner, St Julien boasts 201 guest rooms which feature Leaping Bunny-Certified Cruelty-Free amenities, while all of the property’s to-go cutlery, boxes and cups are 100% certified compostable. Additionally, Jill’s Restaurant partners with The Golden Hoof Farm, a local, 27-acre “slow food farm.” Jill’s provides the farm with 400-600 pounds of compost weekly for its pig feed, and in return, Jill’s receives specialty food items for use in the restaurant. St Julien also has an on-site garden, and seasonal herbs and produce are utilized for drinks, dishes and spa treatments within the hotel’s venues. The property also has a rooftop bee colony, and uses the honey for spa treatments and within its culinary offerings.

Sharing Boulder’s commitment to environmental stewardship, the hotel further extends its green initiatives into the public space by hosting events to raise awareness of conservation and sustainability. St Julien participates in Earth Day, Bike to Work Day, monthly Boulder Creek cleanups and serves as the City of Boulder’s official Earth Hour headquarters as well.
