Wizz Air opens new routes from Gdansk

Wizz Air, the largest low fare – low cost airline in Poland and Central and Eastern Europe announced that it would expand its base in Gdansk by adding a third aircraft, launching new routes and increasing frequencies on some of the existing services.

The brand new Airbus A320 aircraft will arrive directly from the manufacturer’s factory in Toulouse and will start operations on 17 December. It will enable the airline to launch new flights to Milan Bergamo and Eindhoven twice and thrice a week respectively. Furthermore, Wizz Air would increase frequencies on 6 of its 14 existing services.

"We are very pleased that we are able to put more capacity into Gdansk. The base’s performance demonstrates that our proposition is right for the market and we see a significant potential yet to be tapped upon. With placing a new aircraft we will be able to grow almost 50% in 2010 versus 2009. You can expect us to be offering more new routes and more low fares going forward" said John Stephenson, Executive Vice President of Wizz Air.

Wizz Air launched its first flight from Gdansk in August 2004 and opened a base in March 2006 with one Airbus A320. The second aircraft was put into operation in July 2007. In the last 5 years Wizz Air has carried almost 2,5 million passengers to and from Gdansk. Currently the airline flies to 14 destinations and employs 64 local crew. Wizz Air will start hiring cabin attendants and pilots shortly.

Wizz Air carried over 6,5 million passengers in the last 12 months. The airline’s fleet is currently consisting of 25 Airbus A320 aircraft operating from 11 bases in Poland, Hungary, Bulgaria, Romania, Ukraine and the Czech Republic.
