Madeira, Portugal announces new schedule for first-ever direct flights from the U.S.

Madeira revises operations schedule for direct flights between New York and Funchal this Spring.

NEW YORK – Madeira Promotion Bureau announced that direct air operations from New York, USA to Madeira, Portugal will be experiencing an updated schedule, including a hiatus from the end of January through March 7, 2022 and a new, extended schedule from March 7 through the end of May 2022. Initially launched in November 2021, these flights marked the first-ever direct flights to Madeira from a U.S. gateway, flying from New York (JFK) to Funchal (FNC). Travelers can also still easily access this European island paradise via numerous connecting gateways, such as Lisbon or Porto.

The pause in operations for the direct flights only takes into consideration potential traveler cancellations due to the spread of the omicron variant, not only ensuring the continued success of the new flight route, but also providing travelers with ample opportunity to rebook their travel to Madeira in the spring via the expanded schedule. In addition to the extension, the destination is excited to announce that direct flight operations are expected to continue in the fall and winter this year.

The successful launch of Madeira to New York direct air operations have allowed us to validate that U.S. travelers truly appreciate what Madeira has to offer as a destination,” said Executive Director at the Madeira Promotion Bureau Nuno Vale. “We look forward to the continued growth of this new, accessible route this spring, and wish to extend a warm welcome to all U.S. travelers in the weeks and months to come.”
