Flocking to Mexico for medical tourism

With advanced facilities similar to American hospitals, Mexico has become one of the premier destinations for individuals traveling abroad to receive medical care.

Mexico has gained more popularity as a destination for patients looking for affordable healthcare beyond their borders in recent years. Medical tourism to Mexico for health care is near the United States, and the relatively low travel expenses draw Americans, Canadians, and many more. Roughly 1.2 million tourists go to Mexico each year to receive medical treatments.

Is medical tourism a more affordable option
Originally, Mexico’s medical tourism was known solely for its dental, bariatric, and cosmetic procedures. Yet, its orthopedic operations, cancer treatment, and heart surgery now add to Mexico’s health care appeal. Patients who travel across the border can save between 45% to 75% on their medical procedures. With advanced facilities similar to American hospitals, Mexico has become one of the premier destinations for individuals traveling abroad to receive medical care. Moreover, with highly competitive doctors, bariatric surgeons, and nursing attendants, the country is perfect for worry-free medical procedures.

Hospitals, care, and medication
According to the World Health Organization, the health care of Mexico is ranked 61 globally. Private hospitals in Mexico are standard with similar quality and care like those in the United States. Some medical packages offer accommodation and monitoring outside the city and are close to the famous beaches. The finest hospitals and clinics in Mexico are in Guadalajara, Monterrey, and Mexico City.

Most Mexican private clinics that provide services to U.S. citizens exist near the United States borders—located in towns such as Mexicali, Laredo, and Tijuana. In Mexico, the wait time for health care is non-existent. There is even the capability to preserve prescription medications for added convenience and peace of mind. Pharmaceutical drugs in Mexico are also a fraction of the cost of prescription drugs generally found in the United States and Canada.

International patient experience in Mexico
Private room accommodations and personal one-on-one interactions with their doctor or surgeon are just some of the experiences international patients in Mexico will have. Hospitals and clinics are also equipped with cutting-edge technology, knowledgeable doctors, and on-site medical staff specializing in international patients.

Currently, there are 9 JCI (Joint Commission International) accredited hospitals and clinics in Mexico, including Galenia Hospital and Angeles Hospital. Furthermore, most of these hospitals also have CSG accreditation provided by the General Health Council of Mexico.

Standard medical treatments in Mexico
Mexico’s medical treatments make it one of the most popular destinations for cosmetic surgery, dental services/surgery, aesthetic surgery, and bariatric surgery. Hospitals in Mexico, particularly in Tijuana, have recently gained a reputation for bariatric surgery due to its rigorous and safe standards for weight loss. This is an electoral procedure that most U.S. insurance providers won’t cover.

Overall, surgery in the United States is usually three to four times more expensive than in Mexico, and it is not always covered with insurance. In Canada, however, it is covered, but there are longer wait times that can take up to 10 years to get an elective surgery like a gastric sleeve or RNY gastric bypass.
