665% surge in dog-friendly holiday searches as nearly half of Brits get a new pet over lockdown

When comparing the most recent YoY data available (May 20 – May 21), searches for the term ‘dog-friendly holidays’ has increased over 665%, going from 2,900 to a massive 22,200 average monthly searches.

According to a recent study based on research conducted by holiday park Cofton Holidays, nearly half of Brits (44%) got themselves a new pet over the lockdown period and are frantically searching for suitable pet-friendly holiday destinations. When comparing the most recent YoY data available (May 20 – May 21), searches for the term ‘dog-friendly holidays’ has increased over 665%, going from 2,900 to a massive 22,200 average monthly searches.

When looking into more specific holiday types, the term ‘dog-friendly lodges’ has also peaked dramatically YoY, increasing by 400% (880 vs 4,400).

In addition to mining search data, Cofton Holidays surveyed 2,000 UK residents and received overwhelming results showcasing that these new lockdown pets have helped people to feel happier (39%), more loved (34%), and amused (30%).

When looking at certain age groups, the survey revealed that more than half (55%) of 55-64-year-olds and 46% of 35-44-year-olds felt happier after getting their new pet, and 43% of 18-24-year-olds cited that they felt more loved after living with their new pet for a just a few months. This could be a reflection on the harsh reality of social distancing and lockdown measures over 2020 and into 2021.

Brits have also proved that they are indeed a nation of dog lovers, with 20% of all new pets being that of a man’s best friend. And it’s the younger generation leading the way when it comes to new dog ownership with 48% of 18–24-year-olds surveyed opting to get a new dog over the lockdown period.

The rise in demand for dog-friendly holidays has also seen Cofton Holidays expand their current offering for pet-friendly accommodation on-site. New dog-friendly lodges are being launched in July 2021 which will offer guests luxury accommodation overlooking verdant countryside in South Devon and will include an enclosed patio area, a dog mat, blanket, bowl, and extra treats.
