ANEK<.> Lines recently announced significant increases in the number of passengers and vehicles its vessels carried in the first two months of the

year.

The firm`s figures show that, compared to 1999, it transported 80 percent more passengers, 112% more cars and 37% more trucks. Last year it carried 231,877 passengers compared to 217,037 in 1998, representing a rise of 6.8%; 63,233 trucks compared to 58,050 (up 8.9%); and 59,993 cars compared to 65,851 (down 8.8%).

The company`s Crete V vessel will set sail in July followed in October by the first ship of two being built by Norway`s Fossen shipyards – fortifying its position in the Adriatic and building on its potential to lead the market.

The four top lines in the Adriatic are Superfast<.> Ferries (subsidiary of Attica Enterprises), Minoan Lines, Strintzis and ANEK.

More specifically, Superfast Ferries is in first place in car-passenger traffic, Minoan is ranked second, Strintzis third and ANEK fourth. In terms of car transport, Minoan heads the list followed by Superfast Ferries, Strintzis and ANEK. It should be noted that Attica Enterprises and Strintzis have shared interests.
