Munich airport together with the German air navigation service provider, DFS, and EUROCONTROL have recently held a workshop to share experiences of the implementation of Airport ollaborative decision-making (CDM) with other European airports.

The EUROCONTROL Airport CDM project is already improving the operational efficiency of a number of airports in Europe, delivering benefits such as greater predictability and reduced taxi times by 10% on average, 2.65M€ in fuel saving per annum (18.700 tonnes CO2) at Munich alone. Airport CDM endeavours to bring all the main airport partners together to share operational data in a transparent way. By enhancing decision making processes operational efficiency is enhanced and improved use is made of the available airport infrastructure and resource management. The Munich meeting, which took place on Thursday 26th April brought together representatives from airports including Amsterdam, Barcelona, London Heathrow, Madrid, Vienna and Zurich to hear how the Munich CDM team had both defined and executed the implementation of airport CDM locally.

“Culture change and trust between the partners was the biggest hurdle to overcome but Munich Airport CDM Project has proven that everything was possible in such a multi partnered project,” said Anette Grossmann, CDM Project Manager at Munich airport.

Airport CDM is also seen as the mechanism to increasingly integrate airports into the Air Traffic Management Network. Munich is one of the leading CDM airports in this area, and has already completed initial message exchange trials with the Central Flow Management Unit (CFMU). Already these are demonstrating positive results, and the Departure Planning Information messages are giving the CFMU more accurate information on departing flights. Further operational live trials have started on the 7th May 2007 between Munich Airport and the CFMU and will be expanded to Zurich and Brussels over the coming months.

“The success of Munich airport in implementing the EUROCONTROL Airport CDM project was only achievable by the commitment, drive and belief commonly shown by the project team” said Elisabeth Lagios the EUROCONTROL A-CDM Project Manager. “We hope that other airports will have learnt valuable lessons from the Munich experience and we hope to see additional airports becoming operational with A-CDM in the coming year.”
