Hotel prices have increased in each of the top ten national and internal destinations this New Year’s Eve. The largest price increases can be found in Edinburgh, where prices have increased by 332 per cent to an average of £458 on the 31st December. The second largest increases are in Prague, where prices are up to 284 per cent to an average of £292. Large price hikes can also be found in Berlin (up 160 percent to £187) and Tenerife (up 155 per cent to £263).

Travel trends:
– UK users are willing to pay an average of £154 for their New Year’s hotel stay. This is one of the highest rates, with only travellers from the United Arab Emirates (average of £199), Mexico (£175) and Switzerland (£171) willing to pay more.
– UK users will stay at their chosen destination for an average duration of 5 nights. Norwegians, Argentinians and Finnish will take the longest New Year’s Eve break (average of 8 nights), while users from Indonesia, Japan, Thailand and Taiwan will take the shortest holiday (average of 3 nights).
– 4 star hotels were the most popular New Year’s choice among UK travellers (accounting for 40 per cent of searches), followed by 3 star (28 per cent) and then 5 star hotels (12 per cent).

Denise Bartlett, UK Public Relations said: “Although it is normal for hoteliers to increase their prices for the popular New Year period, these price hikes seem be growing on a yearly basis. Last year, our data showed that hotel prices in Edinburgh were up to 146 per cent – this year, this figure has increased to 332 per cent.”

“According to our data, UK users are only willing to pay an average of £154 per night for their New Year’s break. With many of these average prices much higher than that, it would be interesting to know how many people were deterred by the high prices.”

“The city break is by far the most popular option this New Year, with only one winter sun destination (Tenerife) featuring in the top ten international destinations. Similarly, in the UK travellers are heading to the largest cities, with only one non-city destination (Blackpool) in the top ten.
