UK families lag behind Europe in summer holiday stakes

Fewer Britons having a holiday compared to France, Germany, Italy and Spain.

LONDON, UK – A new survey of 1,800 people across Europe has revealed that fewer families in the UK will be going on holiday this summer compared to those in Italy, Spain, Germany and France. In the UK, 17 per cent of respondents said they would not be taking a summer break, compared to just 6 per cent in Italy, 10 per cent in Spain, 12 per cent in Germany and 16 per cent in France.

HomeAway, the world’s leading holiday homes website with more than a million listings, say economic concerns play a key factor in families not planning a holiday and highlights the importance of taking a break.

A recent YouGov survey said that nearly half of British adults felt stressed every day or every few days, with 59 per cent saying life was more stressful than 5 years ago – making a holiday even more essential.

Karen Mullins, Marketing Director, HomeAway UK says: “We were surprised to see that so many British holidaymakers wouldn’t be taking a summer break this year. Traditionally the annual summer holiday is seen as something of a national Institution. Brits should follow the path of their European counterparts and relax. Working hard, without a break, can really take its toll and holidays offer a valuable opportunity to recharge the batteries and re-energise.

“Renting a holiday home offers superb value for money, compared to the traditional resort style holiday, and they are a great way of getting the whole family together on a budget. With more than a million listings to choose from, we are sure that anyone who has not yet booked their summer getaway can find somewhere special to stay with HomeAway.”
